Post Windows volume not detected by OS X Startup
Hi,

I am on Mac OS X 10.5.1 on a MacBook Pro.

I installed Vista Ultimate 32-bit via bootcamp and everything was working fine.
I installed MacFUSE + ntfs-3g from the official sites then after a while I uninstalled it. (using the uninstall scripts)
After doing so I was unable to see my Vista volume and couldn't see the windows partition in Startup. However my windows is fine as I can start it up using the Leopard upgrade disk.

I've now re-installed macFuse and ntfs-3g and can see my vista partition but startup still doesnt detect it so the only way I can boot into Vista now is via the Leopard startup disk.

Any ideas what could have gone wrong and how I can fix this problem?

Post OS 10.5.2 won't let me choose XP startup
Greetings,

I can't set Win XP SP3 as the startup disk on OS 10.5.2 System Preferences. XP (formatted as NTFS) does not show up as a choice in Sys Pref "Startup". I can hold down the option key to restart, but I don't want to use the option key every time.

I checked apples forum and several other people posted the same problem after installing NTFS, and it seems that was about when it happened to me also.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Mark[/img]

Post reformatted
Greetings,

After I installed NTFS 3G, I lost the ability to set the start up disk in "system preferences" for XP (XP didn't even show). I reformatted my HD installed OS X Leopard, used bootcamp to install XP and now I have control of my start up disk again. Obviously I won't by installing NTFS 3G again.

Here is the reply from Amit Singh, MacFUSE developer:
Quote:
People keep asking about the ntfs-3g and Startup Disk prefpane "issue"
with Boot Camp. If you have ntfs-3g active and have a "Boot Camp"
Windows volume, the latter does not show up in the Startup Disk
prefpane.

The Startup Disk prefpane is simply filtering out (i.e. not
displaying) any mounted volumes that it doesn't consider bootable. Its
definition of a Boot Camp volume includes that the mounted volume
either be of type "msdos" or "ntfs"--this is hardcoded into the
prefpane plugin.

$ cd /System/Library/PreferencePanes/StartupDisk.prefPane/Contents/
MacOS
$ cat StartupDisk | strings | egrep -e 'msdos|ntfs'
msdos
ntfs

That's all there is to it. The volume is still bootable--it's just the
prefpane GUI that's refusing to show the volume. You can hold the opt
key during startup and choose the Windows partition to boot from. You
can also remount it (read-only) using the standard OS X ntfs, and it
should start showing up in the prefpane.

If you think this "breakage" is catastrophic, you should ask Apple to
do something about it.

In short, if you want to do something about the problem then please ask Apple to let us support you. Currently they block us to help you.
