Post Windows/Linux boot breaks consistency
Hi,

I'm running a dual boot machine with XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
Both OSs use the same NTFS partition for data. (It's not the XP boot partition)

I've enountered the following problems:
1. After booting to XP, one file was damaged - unread and undeleatable from both
OSs.
2. After the same boot, a different file was reverted to an older version. I'm sure
that the newer version existed because it was already backed up.
3. Files with ':' created by Linux cannot be opened or deleted by windows.

When asking help from ntfs-3g, please indicate the ntfs-3g version.

May be a consequence of some improper unmount. Start chkdsk on Windows to get back to a clean state.

This is a feature of Windows. There are about ten such characters which Windows considers illegal in file names, and ntfs-3g can do nothing about it.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

Thanks for your quick reply.
I was not asking for help, though. I just wanted to report a bug.

Regarding the ':' issue - I think it's worth considering adopting this (one of many) silly Windows feature.
Probably all NTFS-3g users use it because they want it to be readable from windows too.

Best,
Ittay

The issue is explained here: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g ... filenames2

The files with "special" characters can be read fine with the proper Windows software. Limiting the character set would break a lot of Linux software and much more users would complain. Justified. Currently there are about 1 from 100,000 people commenting this issue. Otherwise there would be about 9 from 10.

The solution is really very simple. If one doesn't want filenames with "special" characters then he/she shouldn't create them.
